Vern McKinley “Financing Failure”
February 29th, 2012
They told us that the banks were “too big to fail.” That there would be all manner of doom and despair if they were not bailed out.
But, were they telling us the truth?
Did they even know what would happen if a bank, or two, or several, actually did fail?
In his new book “Financing Failure” banking expert and Independent Institute research fellow Vern McKinley reveals how little the men and women in charge of regulating banks actually knew.

Stacy Cordery “Juliette Gordon Low”
February 27th, 2012
A wealthy widow, with lots of time and money on her hands and a powerful impulse to do something constructive — and fun — with her life, is at the center of a new biography by history professor Stacy Cordery.
Her book is called “Juliette Gordon Low.” And if that name rings a bell, you might be a former Girl Scout.
Low — known to generations of American girls as “Daisy” — was the driving force behind the founding of the Girl Scouts of America.
Her story, while having little to do with Thin Mints or Samoas, is about strength and courage, ego and stubbornness.

Christopher Plummer took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor Sunday night, for his role as an elderly widower in “Beginners.”
At age 82 Plummer becomes the oldest Oscar winner ever. He is two years older than Jessica Tandy was when she won Best Actress for “Driving Miss Daisy.”
Congratulations, to one of Eye on Books’ favorite actors!

Dr. Ben Carson “America the Beautiful”
February 22nd, 2012
He is one of America’s most respected doctors. But you may not have known that Dr. Ben Carson is an astute amateur historian, and a keen student of American greatness.
And he’s worried that we are frittering away that greatness.
In his new book “America the Beautiful” Dr. Carson shares his insights on where we have gone astray, and why he is so worried that the United States is walking the sad and familiar historical path to ruin once taken by the Roman, Greek, and British empires.
He is not shy about providing a faith-based prescription for restoring the country’s greatness.

Philip Coggan “Paper Promises”
February 17th, 2012
The west’s borrowing-and-spending spree is over. After four decades of splurging, it’s clear that we aren’t going to be able to pay everything back.
In his new book “Paper Promises,” Economist columnist Philip Coggan shows us what the coming new economic system could look like. We don’t know exactly what’s going to happen, he concedes. But one thing we do know. China, as the world’s biggest creditor, will be calling the shots, much as the U.S. did in the twentieth century and Britain in the nineteenth.
