A graduate of Princeton and Stanford Universities, Selden Edwards is a former English teacher and headmaster. He began writing The Little Book in 1974.
The fact that the American mass democratic system came to maturity at the same time that Lincoln came to maturity, that he was learning his politics as those politics were themselves developing and evolving into the definitive mass democracy that we know today, means that Lincoln was bringing something to that system .. that had, itself, been influenced by the development of evangelical Protestantism.
A onetime rock musician named Wheeler Burden lives in 1988 San Francisco. But in Selden Edwards' debut novel "The Little Book," Wheeler has somehow (don't ask him how) been whisked away to Vienna, Austria. But getting home again is going to prove extraordinarily difficult, because the place he find himself in is Vienna in the year 1897.
And much has been made in the press about the fact that Selden Edwards began writing this book over three decades ago -- on a typewriter, naturally, in what now seems like its own kind of "back to the future" effect.
