“Nuclear power is the only form of electricity generation that can destroy a city.”  – Dr. Helen Caldicott.

The world now looks on as Japan struggles to bring its crippled nuclear reactor under control without causing an even worse disaster. Australian physician Dr. Helen Caldicott has been a vocal opponent of nuclear power ever since the Three Mile Island accident in 1979.

In a 2006 interview about her book “Nuclear Power is Not the Answer” Dr. Caldicott told me:

“If Indian Point goes, which is 35 miles north of Manhattan, up to 700,000 people could die, some immediately, some over the long term from cancer. And Manhattan would be uninhabitable forevermore.”

The radiation now leaking from the Fukushima reactor may give people for years to come.  In 2006, Dr. Caldicott told me,

“Forty percent of Europe is now radioactive from Chernobyl. I do not buy European food, because the radiation bioconcentrates in the food chain. You don’t know if a piece of Danish cheese or Turkish dried apricots or French wine or English lamb is containing radioactive material that later will cause you to develop cancer.”

Agree with her or not, Dr. Caldicott raises serious questions about the safety and efficacy of nuclear power.

Chernobyl was incredibly frightening and really should have taught the world a lesson. Fukushima could be humanity’s extinction event, we could be going the way of the dinosaurs here.
