Santa and Rudolph are pretty standard Christmas icons — but Santa’s elves are a rather anonymous lot. I mean, really, don’t you ever wonder exactly how Santa knows who’s been naughty and nice? It’s the elves who help, of course.

Carol Aebersold remembers a tradition in her family, when she was growing up, about an elf who watches children by day and reports to Santa each night. A while back, with encouragement from her grown-up daugters, that old family tradition became what we now see in Carol’s book “The Elf on the Shelf.”
