Dana Priest “Top Secret America”
September 9th, 2011
Since September 11th, 2001 there has been explosive growth in a new industry in America. It’s the business of homeland security, what’s come to be known as “the terrorism-industrial complex.”
It has given rise to something Washington Post investigative reporter Dana Priest calls “Top Secret America.” She and co-author Willliam Arkin first wrote about this in a series of articles for the Post in 2010, and have now published a book with even more details. It’s a world cloaked in a nearly-impenetrable invisibility called “national security,” and as a result, no one knows how big this secret America is, how effective it is at keeping us safe, or how it does what it does. No one is even sure what it costs, and if we’re getting results for our money.
