David Linden “The Compass of Pleasure”
May 10th, 2011
Can science explain why food gives us so much pleasure? Or why some people get such a high from gambling? And why almost everybody likes sex and chocolate, occasionally at the same time?
Not only can science explain it all, says Johns Hopkins University neuroscience professor David Linden, it can also explain why intense pleasure can lead to addiction. In his book “The Compass of Pleasure” Linden zeroes in on a small portion of the human brain known as the medial forebrain pleasure circuit, and how it controls that which makes us happy.
And you know what? Do an anonymous good deed, and your brain may give you the same pleasure response as the drug that gets you high.
