Thirty years ago the nation came within a hair’s breadth of losing President Ronald Reagan through assassination by young gunman John Hinckley, Jr. He had come to the Washington Hilton hotel — now often dubbed the “Hinckley Hilton” by DC locals — to prove his love for actress Jodie Foster by shooting the President.

Del Quentin Wilber of the Washington Post has now written a book, “Rawhide Down,” that documents a minute-by-minute — in some cases second-by-second — account of what happened that day, just 70 days into Reagan’s first term in office.
