In turn-of-the-20th century London, Dr. Hawley Crippen, a patent medicine merchant, kills his unfaithful wife, then disposes of her body in a chillingly efficient way. He makes an escape with his new lover, boarding a luxury ocean liner bound for Quebec.

And he might have gotten away with it, except for a new invention that many regarded as supernatural.Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi had perfected wireless communication, and it was in use aboard the ship Dr. Crippen and his lover were using for their getaway. Unbeknownst to them, the entire world was listening in, as Scotland Yard chased them across the Atlantic.

The parallel stories are told in a new book by the author of “Devil in the White City” Erik Larson. His book is called “Thunderstruck.”
