In the popular vernacular, the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer.

Alarmingly, it’s much worse than that, says political journalist George Packer. His book “The Unwinding” is a street-level examination of a nation in crisis.

In a narrative that speaks through a few Americans who are not in “the one percent,” as well as some who are, Packer illuminates what has happened to the United States over the past thirty or forty years or so,
