George Packer “The Unwinding”
June 28th, 2013
In the popular vernacular, the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer.
Alarmingly, it’s much worse than that, says political journalist George Packer. His book “The Unwinding” is a street-level examination of a nation in crisis.
In a narrative that speaks through a few Americans who are not in “the one percent,” as well as some who are, Packer illuminates what has happened to the United States over the past thirty or forty years or so,
And it’s ugly.
Seismic shifts within a single generation’s lifespan have created a country of winners and losers, a rapidly widening gulf separating Americans from the very institutions we’ve traditionally trusted most – school, church, government, business, union…
This “unwinding” is creating an America that anyone over a certain not-that-advanced age will soon no longer recognize.
