In medieval times, the last-resort stronghold of a castle was a heavily fortified structure known as “the keep.” In Jennifer Egan‘s new novel two cousins go to work renovating an old castle in Eastern Europe.

The wealthy one, Howard, bought it and wants to turn it into a tourist attraction. He has invited his cousin Danny to come help with the work, but we learn early on in the book that 20 years ago, Danny was partly responsible for a childhood prank that went tragically wrong and left Howie trapped and alone in a cave for three days. What happens when these two reunite is what inspired Amazon to call the book “deliciously creepy.” Egan’s book is called “The Keep.”
