The sex scandals that rocked America’s Catholic churches a decade ago captured the imagination of novelist Jennifer Haigh. Raised Catholic herself, she was — as she says — “floored” by the almost-daily revelations about priests who were being accused of molesting boys or girls, or both. She knew she had to write about it, but it took a while for her to arrive at the right way to write about it.

So after a years-long gestation, Haigh has now produced a novel she calls “Faith.” It’s the story of Father Arthur Breen, a man with his own kind of personal baggage, who winds up among the accused — rightly or wrongly, we’ll leave to you to learn — but it’s also a story told from an unusual point of view.
