Salim Hamdan was Osama bin Laden’s driver, at the time of the September 11th attacks. Just weeks later, Hamdan was captured in Afghanistan, and whisked to the Guantanamo Bay detention center, where he was held without charges or trial until 2004.

That’s when the government appointed him a military lawyer, who was told to get a guilty plea out of him. Instead, that lawyer took up Hamdan’s constitutional cause, recruited a Georgetown law professor to help him build the case, and they sued the President of the United States. And won. Their astounding story, an affirmation of America’s rule of law, is now told by journalist Jonathan Mahler in his book “The Challenge.”
