An 11-year-old boy boards an oceanliner bound from Sri Lanka to London, in Michael Ondaatje‘s new novel “The Cat’s Table.” Traveling alone, he quickly forms alliances with two other boys, as they become a three-musketeers-at-sea to entertain themselves for the three-week duration of the voyage.

They give themselves the run of the ship, snarfing food, carrying out harmless pranks, doing a little recon.
