It is a consensus of many leaders in our time that nationalism, or strong religious or ethnic identity, are antithetical to democracy. Former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky believes it is just the opposite.
In his book “Defending Identity,” the onetime Soviet dissident argues that a strong sense of tribal identity may be essential to a vigorous democracy.
