Neal Thompson “Driving With the Devil”
October 18th, 2006
In the 1930s and ’40s American South, moonshiners and bootleggers transported their illegal product in fast cars specially modified to outrun the revenuers. After a time, the daredevil drivers began racing for profit, instead of to evade the law, and NASCAR was born.
Journalist Neal Thompson now recounts those early years of young men whose exploits laid the foundation for what is now America’s second-most popular sport. Thompson’s book is called “Driving With the Devil.”
