Nelson George “City Kid”
April 4th, 2009
By his own description Nelson George was kind of a nerd, growing up in the ’60s and ’70s in a Brooklyn housing project. He absorbed soul music and Ernest Hemingway, TV sitcoms and Fitzgerald novels.
As a young man he wrote concert reviews for Billboard and The Village Voice, and soon had claimed an influential role in African-American arts. His memoir “City Kid” tells the story of how the arts captured first his imagination, then his soul.
