Longtime New York newspaper editor Sam Briscoe finds his career is unexpectedly over when his paper goes web-only, in Pete Hamill‘s novel “Tabloid City.” And that’s not the worst of it. He gets that news just as he learns about the murder of a longtime friend, socialite Cynthia Harding, in her Manhattan townhouse.

Hamill’s is a fast-moving novel — the entire story takes places in just a 24-hour period, which, of course, was the news cycle, back in the day. Come to think of it, there’s a lot in this book that recalls the way things were, back in the day.
