It’s a very common news headline these days — “Teacher accused of sexual relationship with teen student” — but we rarely get to get inside the heads of those involved to answer the most persistant, most troubling question: why?

Novelist Rebecca Coleman wanted to know, too. Her book “The Kingdom of Childhood” centers on Judy McFarland, a suburban teacher, wife and mother whose interest in a budding young man is entirely inappropriate.
