The young man at the center of the new Russell Banks novel “Lost Memory of Skin” is just 22 years old, and despite the fact he is a virgin, not by choice, he is nevertheless, oddly, also a convicted sex offender. A “zero tolerance” regime has effectively banished this young man, called simply the Kid, to a life under a causeway in Florida, barred from living anywhere near children.

In a book that the New York Times says is “destined to be a canonical novel of its time,” Banks lets the Kid tell his story, a sad and frightening tale of isolation and punishment far out of proportion to the crime he was accused of committing.
