Nearing her death, 89-year-old Lilly Dunne is trying to make sense of her life, her loves, and her adopted country, in Sebastian Barry‘s fifth novel “On Canaan’s Side.”

As she tells it, Lilly fled to America from her native Ireland at the end of the first world war, and over the nearly seven decades that followed, she watched as the events of the twentieth century took the men she loved — brother, husband, son, and finally and heartbreakingly, her grandson.

  2. Susan November 16, 2012 I love potatoes in all shapes and forms!!! But doesn’t there have to be water/liquid in the slow cooker? Have to try the baked potatoes!!

  3. My younger brother is a Mets fan, despite daily corporal punishment dealt out during the baseball season he stuck with them. I rewarded him with surprise tickets to game 3 of Subway Series where the Mets handed Orlando Hernandez his first ever postseason defeat, and Benitez redeemed himself by closing out the win.Until then that was probably the happiest day in his life, I doubt however he will ever be that happy again.
