Most of the talk about race in America takes place on a rather abstract level. But for journalist and author Tanner Colby it took a very personal turn, as he was discomfited to realize one day that he had no African-American friends.

That started him thinking about how, half a century after Martin Luther king spoke so powerfully about his “dream” for America, the nation remained a place where a man could wake up one day and realize the total whiteness of his circle of friends.
