Conservatism, at least as defined by many of its practitioners today, is dying, says New York Times Book Review editor Sam Tanenhaus. He calls his book “The Death of Conservatism,” but before your hackles are raised, listen to his definitions. There are classical conservatives, and then there are “movement conservatives,” ideologues who are decidedly not conservative.

Tanenhaus says it’s the rigidly orthodox movement conservatism that is in its final days. Who are the true conservatives? Would you believe Dwight Eisenhower and .. Bill Clinton?

Don’t mistake the failures of Republicans in recent years for a failure of conservatism, says talk show host, and former Congressman, Joe Scarborough.

America is a conservative country, he maintains, just not “conservative” in an ideological sense. The way to counter a liberal ideologue is not to become a conservative one, he says. Scarborough points the way ahead in his book “The Last Best Hope.”

After former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee fell short of the Republican nomination for President in the summer of 2008, he began writing a campaign memoir, reflecting on the race and prescribing what the GOP should do to improve its chances of winning the White House in 2012.

His book, “Do the Right Thing,” was published immediately after the election in which Barack Obama easily bested John McCain. But Huckabee is not talking about another run for the White House. Yet.

Conservatism has ruined America. Who says? The executive editor of the New Republic, J. Peter Scoblic. In his book “U.S. vs Them” he makes the argument that half a century of American conservatism, from William F. Buckley Jr. to George W. Bush, has left the country weaker, less safe, more isolated, and increasingly vulnerable to the very “evil” the Bush administration warns of.
