Why do so many of the world’s Muslims hate America? Indian-born, Pakistani-raised journalist Irfan Husain uses that simple but plaintive question as the jumping off point for his new book “Fatal Faultlines.” Indeed, Husain takes the question and runs with it, unafraid of offending either the West or the Muslim community in exposing the misconceptions each harbors about the other.

Husain says if we can agree there are at least two sides to every disagreement, the least we need to be able to do is understand the mindset of people whose hearts and mind have been lost by the West and the United States.

After long and heart-rending debate, the panel agrees on a winning design. The envelope containing the winner’s name is opened – and the panel realizes, with shock and surprise and, for some, horror and disgust, that the designer they’ve chosen is a Muslim-American.

As Waldman imagines the public reaction – spanning the gamut from political to religious to cultural to patriotic – her characters, and her readers, are required to reassess no less than what it means to be an American.
