As she tells it, Lilly fled to America from her native Ireland at the end of the first world war, and over the nearly seven decades that followed, she watched as the events of the twentieth century took the men she loved — brother, husband, son, and finally and heartbreakingly, her grandson.

Two people’s stories tell a single tale, in Irish playwright and novelist Sebastian Barry‘s book “The Secret Scripture.” A 100-year-old mental patient named Roseanne McNulty has been penning her autobiography, while her psychiatrist, an enigmatic man named Dr. Grene, is keeping a journal of his own.
