My 10,000th Author Interview
September 25th, 2013
There aren’t many times in life that you get the chance to do something that is not only fun and inspiring but that puts you in close proximity to the world’s best thinkers, doers, creators, leaders, and heroes.
Rarer still is the chance to keep doing that for many years.
It was about a year ago that I first realized I was closing in on an important milestone in my author-interviewing career: my ten thousandth interview.
At first the number didn’t seem quite real. But there it was. Since 1985, I had sat down with an author, and talked with them about their book, nearly ten thousand times.
Then I began wondering who #10,000 would be. Or should I leave even it to chance, the luck-of-the-schedule, like a store’s 10,000th customer?
No, I decided, I could not let such a distinction land randomly. To be sure, I have great respect for all the authors I interview, but I wanted this distinction – which is, after all, as much about the authors as it is me – to fall on someone special.
It took only a moment for the right name to come to me.
This gifted storyteller has become a modern American cultural icon. Yet there is no one who is more loyal and generous with his time, none more genuinely interested in his fans and what they’re interested in, no one with greater respect from his peers.
Brad was a natural for #10,000.
And then, as you’ll hear in this, my ten thousandth interview, Brad surprised me in a way only he could.
